Cheerleading today has outgrown its original definition as a means of rooting for a certain team or individual in an activity. It has even become in itself a still developing sport genre and a mix of dance and acrobatics. With the advent of internationally released, Cheerleading based films such as “Bring it On” and broadcasts of the cheerleading competitions in ESPN, it has heavily influenced several countries including ours. Here in the Philippines, cheerleading or cheerdance, as it is more favorably called, is highly broadcasted during Interschool competitions such as the UAAP and the NCAA and is well received by the masses, inspiring mostly the youth. Despite the western origin of professional cheerleading, the Filipinos have distinctly put their mark on this remarkable sport with their trademark role calls and movements.
